Audi Created Diesel
Audi and the clean tech company Sunfireis are breaking new ground in the fuel industry by making a new fuel for internal combustion engines made from just water and carbon dioxide.
Called “e-diesel”, this synthetic fuel has the potential to make a huge impact when it comes to climate change.

Their base product, which they’re calling ‘blue crude’ is created by using a three-step process. The first step is by taking electricity from renewable sources like wind, solar or hydropower and using it to produce hydrogen from water via reversible electrolysis. For the second step, the hydrogen is mixed with CO2 that has been converted into CO, resulting in the production of the long-chain hydrocarbon compounds that make up the blue crude. The third step is by refining the blue crude to create the end product, the synthetic e-diesel.
According to Sunfire CTO Christian von Olshausen, the engine runs quieter and fewer pollutants are being created.
