Whether warming your car up in a very cold winter is a good thing or not has proven to be a contentious subject. Now, finally, someone has pointed a thermal camera at a frozen engine so we can see what exactly is going on and stop the never-ending arguments.

Engineering Explained strikes again when pointing out that thermal camera at a  flat-four in a 2016 Subaru that has been sitting all night in 22 degree (F) temperatures. It’s not the coldest winter of them all but it’s enough to test it out.

Surely, modern cars are way better at getting started in the cold but be that as it may, you still need to take it easy on your car when there are cold days. It’s fascinating to see the heat spreading everywhere in the engine- check it out!
