What is an induction motor and what are its basic working principles?

An induction motor is probably the most commonly used electrical machine ever. It’s easy to maintain, it’s cheaper and more rugged compared to other alternatives. In addition, an induction motor always runs at speeds that are lower than synchronous speed.

The most common type of induction motor features a squirrel cage rotor. In this cage rotor there are aluminium conductors which were shorted together at both ends. Through 3 symmetrically placed windings 3 currents flow and an air gap flux generating the rotor current is produced.
