Jet engines may have been the greatest invention that men could have possibly come up with back in the days but not now. With the increase of technological advancements the jet engine seems to have backed up a step. However, that doesn’t mean that there is no room for improvements. Jet engines can be much quieter and more efficient than they are today. The solution is simple – all we have to do is adding a gearbox. The downside is that the process of doing so took nearly 30 years.
This new kind of engine has been brought to the public by Pratt & Whitney’ and the innovation that cold change the modern jet engine is called PurePower Geared Turbofan (GTF). The innovation is quite simple. If we take a normal turbofan engine, we’ll see that it features a fan on the front for air take and a smaller turbine inside. These components share a shaft, however, it’s not as efficient as it sounds. If both pieces would spin at optimal speeds, the fan on the front would go much slower than the turbine inside and thus, it would be both quieter and more efficient. The solution? A gearbox.
